This is it!! 2021 is coming to a close. How has your year been?

This is also around the time when most people are taking advantage of the upcoming new year by updating their * look * . You’ll see people getting dramatic haircuts and bold hair colors to shake things up and start the year with a bang.

You are reading this blog post so you might also be considering a change in hairstyle. Don’t worry! We are here to help. Before you set your appointment at your favorite salon, let us educate you about a few things you should know before deciding on a hair color!

“I want to get a light shade hair color but I don’t want bleach”

Salon professionals would probably agree that this is one of the most common statements they hear from clients. I’m sure it is a bit frustrating for them especially when a client insists even though it is impossible.

Think of it like this: have you ever tried coloring over black or any dark paper using colorful crayons? I’m sure it didn’t come out as bright as it was originally if it even shows up at all.

That’s why bleach is used for darker hair.

You might say, “But [this person] didn’t have bleach and she was still able to achieve light hair!” But it really depends on the natural hair of the client.

How does bleach work in hair?

Bleaching strips off the natural color of your hair by hydraulic the melanin molecules present in the hair. Oxidized melanin molecules are colorless but you’ll see that bleached hair usually has a yellow tint. This is because yellow is the natural color of keratin which is the main composition of hair.

Here’s a hair trivia for you: there are a variety of natural hair colors because of the different types of melanin pigment in the hair.

Eumelanin is responsible for black or brown hair
Pheomelanin is the cause for blond and ginger hair
The absence of either melanin is why we get white or gray hair.

Why does bleaching damage the hair?

During counselling, your hairstylists may have already warned you about the possible consequences of bleaching. This process is quite damaging to your hair as it changes the elasticity of your hair and makes the hair cuticle more open.

As mentioned in our previous blog as to why you experience hair fall , open cuticles are a big NO-NO since it makes your hair prone to split ends and makes weaker hair strands.

How can you take care of bleached hair?

First of all, do not bleach your hair by yourself!

There are a lot of Youtube videos of people trying to bleach their own hair, so you might be tempted to do it yourself too. We strongly advise you to leave this process to professionals so your hair won’t be ruined! Too much damage caused by bleaching can be reduced if done properly.

If for some reason you cannot go to a salon but you really want to try bleaching your hair, do a lot of research first!

Invest in a good shampoo and conditioner.

Since bleached hair is dry, it is more likely to get tangled easily. You should use a good conditioner after every shampoo to reduce these while also making your hair soft and shiny.

Kiyosa Japanese Total Beauty offers shampoo and conditioner for you to use! These are guaranteed high quality since they are imported from Japan.

Deep conditioning is a great help!

You should also use a deep-conditioning treatment every week. This will continue to add moisture to your hair and make it more manageable.

Protect your hair when styling!

Use heat-protectant whenever you are styling using blow-dryer, hair curler and iron to shield your hair from loss of moisture.

Brush hair gently starting at the ends then working up to the roots. Do not pull hard so that it will not break and cause hair fall!

Is it possible to get light hair color without bleach?

Yes, it is possible to get light hair color without using bleach. However, it will still depend on your actual natural hair.

Hair thickness and pigmentation plays a huge factor if you want light hair without using bleach. If your hair is thick and dark, it might be impossible to lift the tone enough to achieve your desired shade.

However, you are lucky if you have naturally thin hair! Lighter shades are easier to achieve because the colors can be easily lifted without using too much products. If you have also previously colored your hair brown before it might be easier.

Since it is a case to case basis, it is best to consult a professional hairstylist if your desired color is achievable with your hair! Salons usually offer free consultations so you won’t need to feel pressured that you have to do the procedure on the same day and have more time to consider your options!
